How many times do i need to feed my puppy per day?

Q. this is my first times getting a puppy so I need some help. i have a 2 months old shih tzu puppy. how many times do i need to feed him per day? I also got him from a petstore and they said to feed him vitamins and stuff, should i keep doing this? and which type of food is better for my puppy, wet or dry? and is there anything ekse i should know to take care of him. o and any ideas on how to train him and housebreak? thanks!

A. I feed raw so it may be different with kibble. When I fed my kibble pups, they were fed 2x a day. With raw, I feed younger pups 3x, then at about 4 months I move down to 2x, then between 6 months and a year I switch to 1x. It depends on the pup. As they get older, they will show less interest in a meal. Make that meal smaller while making the other meal larger. Eventually, a pup might stop eating the one meal altogether and that's when you know you can feed once a day.

I would keep giving him supplements since pet store puppies come from puppy mills and can be rather unhealthy. Also, if you are feeding kibble, supplements should be continued for the duration of the dog's life as it doesn't have the necessary nutrients in it a dog needs.

No matter what you choose, wet or dry, it is not healthy. It is DEFINITELY not healthy to just feed wet. I know a lot of kibble feeders who do both. With wet food, gunk is not going to be scraped off his teeth by anything. At least with kibble, there is a little bit being done, but not nearly enough. With raw, you never have to have their teeth cleaned or even brush them. My collie had NASTY teeth until I started him on raw and the bones he eats on a daily basis has scraped them clean (yes, dogs can eat bones as long as they are not cooked or the weight bearing bones of large ungulates such as bovines).

As far as housebreaking, we had our pup housebroken by 10 weeks by leaving the back door open during the day once he got the idea of peeing outside. By 10 weeks, he was completely reliable and he has had no accidents since and he is almost 5 months. He weaves in and out of the blinds on the back door when he needs to go out.

Back to the dog foods. The best brands you can feed a dog are Orijen and Acana but Taste of the Wild and Blue Buffalo are decent foods as well. NEVER feed a dog 'Ol Roy, Pedigree, Eukanuba, Iams, Purina, or any of the other "cheap" brands. Those are terrible foods that no animal should have to eat.

How to care for a 15 oz shih tzu puppy?
Q. My mom brought home a 15oz shih tzu male puppy. eyes are not open yet and the mother wont feed it? he can only breathe out of one nostril? and suggestions?
thanks for any help

A. a 15 ounce Shih tzu puppy that's a few days old if the eyes are not open i suggest you take the puppy back and get the owners to get the mother dog to the vet with the puppies now

Is 8 hours too long for a puppy to be at home?
Q. I just bought a shih-tzu puppy and she is sooo attached to me. My 30 yr old sister is home all day but doesn't really care for dogs much. Is 8 hrs too long to leave her at home alone or should I bring her to work and allow her to continue to be attached? I work less than a mile away from home but I work full time. Thanks!

A. I just answered your previous question. If it's okay with your boss, take the pup to work with you. Yes, 8 hours is too long to leave your puppy alone. Puppies younger than 6 months cannot be expected to hold their bladder that long. My pup is 3 months old, and he pees nearly every 2 hours during the day.

I want to buy a female shih tzu in the Kentucky or West Virginia area. Anyone know of any puppies for sale?
Q. I would like a full stock or shih tzu/lhasa mix puppy 6 weeks old and up. Nothing on petfinder or rescue groups most all of them are older need more care than i can provide for them at the present time. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Just for the record, I have looked at the shelters and rescue groups and as I have stated above, I do not have the time to commit to an elderly pet because of the numerous vet trips that they require, nearly all on rescue groups are special needs, which means many trips to the vet, a lot of money, and many times they do not do well with other dogs. My heart goes out to them. I adopted from a shelter not too long and ended up losing my dog. But I want a puppy because I already have a shih tzu/lhasa and he is rather small and I would like to raise the puppy with him.

A. I don't know of any breeders as I'm in another country. Contact your Shih Tzu breed club in your area and get a list of registered breeders. Ask to see parents or mother and printed registered papers.

6 weeks is too young to buy a puppy I would recomend 10 -12 weeks at the earliest.

Don't by a cross breed puppy as you have no idea what it's gonner turn out like. 90% of the time its not the mix they say it is.

If you must have a cross breed rescue one from a shelter!!!

If you don't have time for a elder dog, you certainly don't have time for a puppy. JMO
