Q. Other than medicines for dogs, does anyone know some home remedies or tricks to making your dog feel well? if it helpsto know, she's having diahrea, she's throwing up some, and she's been tired all day. I'm not sure if I should take her to the vet or if these are normal symptoms for sickness in dogs.

cottage cheese (no liquid)

boiled chicken (no grease, no skin, no flavorings)

boiled egg (no butter or oil)

boiled potato (no skin or flavorings)

baked potato (no skin or flavorings)

Continue to feed several small servings of this bland diet for a couple days in gradually increasing amounts until a formed stool is passed. Then, start to wean your pet back to its regular food over the course of a week by gradually working in small amounts of their regular dry dog food.

Do not give your pet bones, snacks or table scraps, because they may irritate the intestinal tract during this time.

Dogs can also be given a dose of Pepto Bismol every 6 hours. (Dosage depends on your dog's weight: 1 ml per lb.) Bonus, the Pepto Bismol also works to stop vomiting.

How often will a dog be able to detect when a human is sick?
Q. I've read countless times in the news or on animal shows about dogs that have early warning systems for their humans' sickness, or how dogs can detect if a person has a heart condition.

But yesterday I was in bed, probably the sickest I've even been at home, and my dog was always crying when he was around me, and jumping on my bed and just hanging around me. Much more so then any other time too.

So can most dogs detect illnesses with humans?

A. Besides for reading our moods there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that dogs can detect cancer. In one study, dogs were found to be able to detect lung, breast and other cancers with an accuracy rate of between 88 and 97 per cent. By contrast, hospital scanners are reckoned to have an accuracy of between only 85 and 90 per cent.

Dogs also seem to have the ability to sense when a person is going to have an epileptic fit. A study conducted in Canada, found that dogs who lived with children prone to epileptic fits behaved oddly before the attacks. Some dogs would lick the childs face, for instance. Others would act protectively, in one case leading a young girl away from a set of stairs moments before she had an attack. The warnings came as early as five hours in advance.

Health experts are now training seizure alert or seizure response dogs, some of which can predict fits.
No one has yet explained how the dog does this. While some scientists argue they detect scent or behavioural clues, others think they can pick up on telltale electrical activity in humans.

Are there any other ways to treat car sickness in dogs?
Q. My dog gets severely ill when we go for car rides. She is a Basset Hound, and she is a dry mouthed Basset. That means that she will not drool unless she is very sick or anxious. She doesn't want to go near the car, and when she is in the car she starts to drool excessively before we even start the car. I've tried to give her ginger, but she does not care for the taste. I don't want to give her drugs. Please be serious and no stupid answers. It's not worth your time or mine. Thanks.

A. This may seem really odd, but some dogs get motion sickness because they have a bone in their neck popped out. Find a dog naturopath or someone who is familar with massaging dogs and try it out. Also try to make the car ride as pleasant as possible. Perhaps have a passenger nurse her and make sure she has toys, treats etc.
