Q. Do you recommend petsmart grooming? do they have a multiple dog/pet discount? just wondering.. i have 3 dogs.. my one dog we had to put to sleep this tuesday. my dogs really need to be groomed & i just don't think i could groom them myself right know..
A. Prices vary by location (cost of living changes across different regions).
I actually *do not* recommend PetSmart Salons. While I'm sure there are many good groomers there, we've seen many injuries come out of our local PetSmart. These range from lacerations due to scissor clips into the skin, to strangulation-like injuries from being too rough with restraint on the grooming table, and two deaths that I'm aware of. The most recent was a healthy 6 year-old Kelly Terrier that we'd just seen for his Annual Exam a month prior.
I'd strongly recommend finding a private groomer with a good reputation as opposed to PetSmart/Grooming Depot and the like.

Q. She is five and was the only dog with two cats in the house. I now have a puppy that is three months old. Sometimes she plays with the puppy, sometimes she acts like a mother and licks her and cleans her and then others she just down right attacks her for no apparent reason. She sleeps wherever she wants. Does what ever she wants most of the time. As soon as she does something bad like bite, she acts submissive and try's to get you to pet her, like she is sorry for what she just did. Is is top dog stuff because of the new puppy or can she be trained not to be aggressive and bite?
A. you've failed in bringing up this dog. Get the pound to take it away. Also, buy a less ridiculous dog next time - these fancy breeds are well known for being nut-jobs.

What to do about a new pet dog who is a rescue but also a rubbish bin raider??
Q. We have a Shih Tzu X Lhasa Apso who is around 7 now and no trouble at all - however we just adopted an 8 month old Shih Tzu X Pekanise and she has worked out how to open all our rubbish bins around the house - the kitchen one has a slide lid - she quickly learned how to open this but today I came home from work to find half the contents of the bin all over the kitchen and the bin lid completely removed - she is also taking on our older dog like she is competing for the position of top dog this only started tonight - any suggestions? We have had her for a week now.
A. I have 3 german shepherds and this is a problem for me. But for a shih tsu it should be NO problem.

1) put the bins under kitchen cabinets with child proof locks on teh cabinet doors.
2) get TALLER BINS - ones that are waist high that a shih tzu can't possibly reach
3) get ones with lids that LOCK
4) face the lids towards the wall. makes it awkward for you, but the dog can't get to the lid to open it
5) put trash bins OUTSIDE, or behind a BABY GATE, or someplace else completely inaccessible.
Never ever leave trash in an open bin in a house with pets. Always have some kind of locking lid or place them where the dogs can't reach them. For some dogs, this is way too much of a treat for them to avoid, no matter how much you scold them. The temptation is too strong, even when they know they shouldn't do it.
