Why do macadamia nuts harm dogs? Are they not made to handle it?

Q. In dicussion, we have been wondering what is it that makes dogs sick from eating macadamia nuts. Can they not disgest it?

What it that harms them? A chemical inside?

A. Hope this helps:
The danger of macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts are another concern. A recent paper written by Dr. Ross McKenzie, a Veterinary Pathologist with the Department of Primary Industries, points to the danger of raw and roasted macadamia nuts for pets.

The toxic compound is unknown but the affect of macadamia nuts is to cause locomotory difficulties. Dogs develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Some affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated.

Dogs have been affected by eating as few as six macadamia kernels (nuts without the shell) while others had eaten approximately forty kernels. Some dogs had also been given macadamia butter.

Luckily, the muscle weakness, while painful, seems to be of short duration and all dogs recovered from the toxicity. All dogs were taken to their veterinary surgeon.

How to prevent dogs coming onto my front yard?
Q. People in my neighborhood do not curb their dogs and occasionally they piss or crap on my lawn. Any type of chemical I could use to deter these pests?

I do not care if it makes the dogs sick. As far as I am concerned, the owners deserve it.

A. I recommend just getting a fence. There are chemicals that you can spray on your lawn to effect the paw pads of dogs, but it would also effect all animal such as birds along with people with sensitive feet alike.

How do I know if my dog is sick?
Q. My dog has lately had eye boogers, I wipe them away but just an hour or two later there back!

Also, we had a broken glass outside and he may have been over there but usually he's not allowed to go out front.

He has been licking and biting at the bottom of his two front paws. I have felt his paws but I don't feel anything.

I was told getting splinters can make dogs sick but I don't know how true that is.

Other than that he seems fine.

A. You can tell when your dog is ill. He will be inactive, maybe have less appetite... it's usually obvious.

Licking and biting the paws sounds like allergies. It could be allergies to anything, like the food, dishes, fleas, etc. (Check that your dog food contains no soy, or grains that are used as fillers, and definitely no "meat by-products").

Many dogs get eye boogers, especially on Malteses. That's usually normal because of tear staining, but if you feel that your dog is getting too much too quickly, you might want to research some probable causes on Google. Could be allergy again.

If anything seems serious, your best bet is to contact your vet. (: But your dog seems healthy for the most part. Hopefully he has not been cut with the glass?

What will happen to a dog if it eats aluminum foil?
Q. Will it make the dog sick or kill it?

A. It could cause tears in the throat or stomach or it could cause blockages in the intestines.

If your dog did this, take him/her to the vet.
