What are the effects of Spaying your pets?

Q. I understand WHY you should spay or neuter your pets, but what emotional changes does it bring if any?

We made the decision to get my 9 month old kitten spayed because she is having all sorts of problems when she's in heat (it lasts for days, is frequent, etc.) -- Originally I didn't want to, but I figured I have to do it at this point.

Does it change their personality? Will it mellow her out or make her more agressive?

A. I don't think it changes their personalities at all, except to make them more relaxed,as they are not going into heat all the time.I just had a 6 month old kitten, and a 9 month old kitten spayed, and a 6 month old male neutered ( they were all abandoned by my neighbors, they are moving ,thank God!) This was on Thursday, and they act just the same as they did before,as have all of the cats I have ever had. It certainly makes males much more mellow, though.Congrats on getting her fixed!

What is the difference between Neutering and Spaying pets?
Q. sorry. i dont have any pets so i dont know any of this termonology.

A. Actually, Neutering is a general term that can be used for either male or female. The term is most often used for males.
You spay a female and castrate a male.

How are pet stores still open if?
Q. puppy mills are illegal? if a truck comes to a store with several breeds of too-young-to-be-away-from-their-mother puppies shouldnt someone (some sort of authoritie) say hey that shouldnt be happening? Wouldn't you realize its coming from a puppy mill? How can I change the law to make it that the only people allowed to breed dogs are licensed breeders and the puppies must be checked by a licensed vet (specialized vet that should be listed on a website for that state/area). Each puppy must come with a health certificate guarenteeing its health (if the puppy is unhealthy the buyer must be notified and a second contract must be signed), a number to the vet that checked the puppy, a contract that states you must spay your pet and never breed him/her and there would be more once I mapped more of it out.. how can I do it though? Do I have to wait until I'm out of law school?
to be away from their mother*** it got cut off

A. You have unfortunately bought into the idea propagated by breeders that only they should be able to mate dogs for profit. Nobody ever comments on how many of them are now pursuing mixing breeds for designer dogs; not because they help strengthen either breed, but because it is profitable. Also, nobody ever asks what licensed breeders do with their dogs once they are too old to breed. More than a small number of them destroy the dogs once they are of no further use; just as they do innocent pups that aren't what the breeder wants or considers perfect.

Do spayed or neutered pets have similar operation in humans?
Q. I wonder if the operation to spay and neuter pets is similar to operations made on humans. Humans can still enjoy sexual relations after the operation. But I noticed pets are no longer interested, or is my observation not correct?

A. Your observation is partially correct.

For females, the process is very similar to a full ovariohysterectemy in women. However, a woman will still be interested and enjoy sex to some extent after this surgery, and as a matter of fact, so do female dogs. They will still allow males to 'mate' with them, regardless of the outcome.

Males, however, are a little different. You see, in human men, the testicles are not actually removed. The line connecting the testicles to the penis are cut. Testosterone is still produced and absorbed by the body, therefore, men with vasectomies are still fully functional sexually and will still enjoy sex. CASTRATION of a human man (i.e., eunuchs) is different. If the testicles were to actually be fully removed, the testosterone production would cease, and yes, the male would lose all interest in sex. This was done in historical times in order to create guards for royal women. The eunuchs were big, strong men who protected the women in their private quarters, but had no interest in sex, and so were not a threat to their charges. However, in dogs, even a neutered male may continue to show interest in a female that is in heat. A spayed and neutered pair, however, will probably never attempt to mate.

Hope that helps!
