Where can I find a small breed puppy to adopt/buy in Indianapolis?

Q. I am looking for a small breed puppy that can fit in with our family which includes our 1 year old Boxer. Some of the dominant breeds I am interested in are Yorkie, Yorkipoo, Shitz Tzu, Maltipoo, and Maltese. I have looked some places online and at local shelters, but they charge a ridiculous fee of $600 or more.

A. Have you looked through the dogs on http://www.petfinder.org? These are all dogs available for adoption, and most shelters don't charge beyond $300, and that would be a dog with a microchip, spay/neuter, fully vet-checked, etc. Some shelters even have dogs with their AKC papers, if that matters to you.

Here are Yorkshire terriers and yorkie mixes:

Here are shih tzus and shih tzu mixes:
http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=Shih+Tzu&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=46260

Here are maltese dogs and maltese mixes:
http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=maltese&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=46260

If you don't see any dogs that strike your fancy, find the breed's parent club in Google and contact them for adoptable dogs.

Is it ok to give my yorkie large breed puppy food?
Q. I have a 10 pound 6 year old yorkie and my mom accidentally bought Large Breed Puppy food by prarie is it ok to give it to him?, Because the place where we get our dog food is 40 mins away and my mom refuses to go back and exchange it.
And also it's a 15 pound bag.

A. It really shouldn't hurt much. Regular puppy foods are rich enough to produce excessively fast growth in large breed puppies. That is best coped with by an early switch to an all life stages food. Doing so cuts into the food companies profit margins. Thus they market large breed puppy chow, a cheaper formula, the closer to ALS the better, but an even better profit margin. So I wouldn't worry about it.

As for the calcium, compare the lower level in the large breed puppy chow to the minimum listed for adults at http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/ucm047120.htm Adults can excrete excess calcium, puppies can't. Excess calcium causes joint problems in growing puppies most noticeable in the large breeds. If you know much about canine nutrition and dog food, you would never suggest adding calcium.

Can you recommend a quality multivitamin for large breed puppies?
Q. I have a five month-old Giant Schnauzer and I need to find a multivitamin that's safe for large breed puppies.

A. As your puppy's breeder should have let you know, large breed puppies should not get vitamins. You don't want them growing too fast and damaging joints and ligaments.

Is taste of wild puppy food good for a large breed puppy like newfie?
Q. please suggest some other brands which are good for large breed puppy?

A. Don't know. Never tasted dog food. They eat anything you put in front of them.... all the flavour, gravies, additives and other junk are for the humans who buy the crap. (Sorry, dog food.).
Peace.
