What to expect when getting a puppy neutered?

Q. My 4 month old shih tzu puppy will get neutered next month.

I'd like to know what to expect before and after he gets neutered.
Any tips or advice to help make this process easier for him?

PS: I would definitely ask his vet more questions regarding his neutering. For now, I'd just like to know ideas and opinions from experienced dog owners here on YA.

Thanks and have a great day.

A. l had my 8 month old puppy neutered three weeks ago. l had to give him no food after 8pm the night before, then l took him to the vets at 9am the following morning.
l rang the vets at 3pm to check how the operation had gone, and when to go pick him up.
l went for him at 5pm, he was groggy from the anaesthetic, slept all the way home, he didn't eat anything for the rest of the evening, he just slept.
The following morning it was as if nothing had happened, he was wanting to run around and play, but l had to keep him on his lead and only allow him five minute walks. He needed to take it steady so he didn't pull the stitches and open the wound.
The stitches were disolvable ones, but he needed to go back to the vets after 10 days to check everything was fine and the wound had healed. Then he could go back to his normal walks, running around and playing with my two other dogs.

lf he had tried licking at his stitches he would have needed a bucket collar so he couldn't reach, but luckily he left the stitches alone.
After the first day they do bounce back quickly, it's trying to keep them calm and stop them running and jumping that's the problem.

How many years do you have to be in college to become an animal cop? (Other vet questions included)?
Q. My sister is thinking about being an animal cop, but she wants to know how many years of college she has to take. Also, I want to become a vet, but is there a vet that just does check-ups instead of surgery? Kind of like a nurse? And, is there a type of vet that can check on any animal: small animals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, zoo animals, and the animals on shows like Animal Cop? I really want this to be my career. Thank you in advance for your time. :)

A. ANimal cop might just need training and a high school diploma but depends on the department. The best thing for your sister to do is get an associate degree a two year degree and she can become a cop but people with higher degrees would compete against her for the job.A vet like a nurse is a vet tech and the vet that does small animals, like small animals, reptiles, amphibians is called an exotic vet and a vet who sespecializesn birds in an avian vet ans zoo animals is a zoo vet with didifferentraining.

What food should I use for urinary problems for a male cat?
Q. My cat Lionel is ten years old and still active. However he has had reoccurring urinary tract problems. I recently took him to the vet and they gave me a cat food (Prescription Diet C/D) which Lionel is supposed to eat for the rest of his life. (It has low magnesium).

My problem is that the food is very expensive and I have to go to the vet everytime to get it.

Is there another kind of dry cat food that is available? I heard that Nutro is a good brand. Also, I would like suggestions on any alternatives beside the dry food.

I can ask my vet these questions but I would like to have a 2nd (and 3rd, 4th etc) opinions from Yahoo answers.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A. Welcome to the world of urinary problems in cats. My cat just had a stone the size of a nickel removed so I know what you are going through....I hope. Anyway my doctor also gave me c/d for him but she also said that since it is sooooo expensive that I could give him purina urinary tract health for it and that would be ok. I hope this answers your question but I do know that for sure. As for other kinds I hope to read your answer and see what you are going to do.

How long should I wait before I start working my horse after a bout of collic?
Q. My 9 yr old OTTB had collic yesterday morning. I called the vet out, and he tubed him, and did all the normail things required for collic. He is now fine (I have lessoned his food on instruction from the vet). My question is: how long should I keep his food lessoned, I assume I would need to gradually build him back up (he is already thin); and, when should I resume doing any form of exercise with him?

A. You've already received some good advice...I just want to add that one of my horses tends to colic. I switched him to Purina Senior feed a couple years ago and he's done much better on it since it is more easily digestible. In fact, he hasn't colicked at all since we switched (knock on wood!) You might discuss this with your vet. He is also a hard one to keep weight on, but does very well on the Senior formula.
