Are you suppose to tip a dog groomer?

Q. I think thats 30.00 is too much to groom, but i was just wondering if your suppose to tip a dog groomer?

A. I work in a grooming salon and tips are always appreciated. Unless a groomer owns their own shop they only get a percentage of the money from each dog they groom, usually roughly 50%. So tips are important for their paycheck. Also if you are a regular typically you will get preferential treatment when booking appointments. If a groomer has a full day but knows you are a good tipper they are more likely to try to work you in.

Also, unless you just have a little short haired dog like a Chihuahua with no trimming involved and only a bath than $30 is reasonable. Most of the bigger bath dogs are around $30. If you're getting any trimming down or even a haircut then you really aren't paying that much. A lot of people try to argue with us about prices, saying their dog is only a little dog. But little hairy dogs like Poodles, Yorkies, Shih Tzus, ect often require the most effort. Its difficult to work on an especially small dog and make it look good.

What's the best/easiest way to keep a dog's ears clean?
Q. I'm considering making giant Q-Tips for dogs but the upfront cost for the mass production equipment is enormous.
Is the product a good idea? bad idea?...any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

A. qtips are not good unless you know how to use them as they are more likely to just push the wax down further...cotton balls are better...get an ear wash from petsmart or your vet clinic, and fill the ear canal with it, massage a little bit, and then let your dog shake it's head...then either put the cotton ball in the ear and massage again or you can just wipe with a kleenex around your finger...don't be afraid to stick like a quarter of your finger in, a dog's ear is shaped like a "j" kind of, and you will not hurt the eardrum. do this once a week or when you bathe your dog...if your doing this at least once a week or once every 2 weeks, and the ears are still consistently dirty, get your dog checked for an ear infection at your vet clinic.

What is the best dog food for a 12 yr old lab mix?
Q. He's getting older now and I want him to last as long as possible. Any tips for dog food?

A. Canidea all life stages is a great dog food. If his liver and kidney's are healthy I would also recommend Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul etc. Possibly look at an old age formula. Stay away from brands like pedigree, beneful, alpo, Ol Roy and dog foods found at wal-mart. They're loaded with corn, other filler and by-products.
I would recommend Canidea though.

How to train a dog (pit bull) to be a watch dog?
Q. Okay so were getting a pitbull/boxer puppy soon

of course its going to be the family pet, but then we were also thinking that it could be a watch dog too

How would one go about training for a watch dog?
Its also going to be our first dog, so any tips?

*this dog will not be a fighting dog*
*and we want to train it to be a watch dog, NOT AN AGGRESSIVE DOG*

A. You shouldn't have to train her. If she lives inside the house with you as a member of your family, she views you as her pack and will be naturally protective. Not to mention, just her looks are going to be enough to scare people away. However, if she lives outside, she's not going to feel she belongs to your pack and will care less about guarding you. She will guard HER backyard, which she will view as HER territory. She won't care what happens inside the house as long as no one comes into her yard.

Our pits love everyone and everything, but if there is a noise outside that my female isn't familiar with, she will give a low warning growl to let us know something isn't right or someone is in the yard that she is unfamiliar with. Of course, if you open the door, she's all wiggle butt and happy. She will lick them to death. Our male is not a good watch dog. He doesn't bark ever. He's very chill and relaxed.

ETA: Oahu, my dogs NEVER bark at the mailman and they are pit bulls. They're extremely friendly with him. Of course, they're very well socialized so perhaps that's why they don't freak out when he walks in the yard like our neighbors little yippers do.
