10 year old dog pooping and pissing in the house. No one is home to take care of the dog. What to do?
Q. My friend went through a divorce a while back and his wife and kids brought home a dog that he never wanted. They promised they would take care of the dog. Now his daughter and him are the only ones at the house. The daughter spends the night out with friends, works full time, and goes to school full time. The dad works and is rarely home. He loves his daughter very much, but he's tired of being the one taking care of a dog he never wanted. The dog has ruined the carpets in every single room with poop and piss. When he tells his daughter the dog has to go, she gets VERY upset. He has given her many alternatives and warnings on what to do with the dog, to no avail. Has anyone else gone through this? What would you do? She has just graduated from high school.

A. unfortunately...theres nothing you can do..the dog isn't going to change..and if it does it's not going to be easy to train it. The girl should have to take care of it, or her dad should take something away from her, like tell her if she can't take care of the dog, he's finding a new home for it,(no one is going to want a 10 year old dog that isn't house trained) or she's going to have to find a new place to live with her dog.
That's ridiculous. This question makes me really mad..

I hope something good happends to that poor dog, and the girl stop being so selfish and take care of her responsibilties

How can I tell my sister, I don't want to take care of her dog no more?
Q. I've been taking care of this dog since last year. They only come to town on weekends and have an apartment 2 hrs from here where my brother-in-law goes to school. They'll be back permanently on December, but I just can't wait to get rid of the dog. I feel so sorry for the dog but I'm sick and tired of him.

A. Politey say to her that you are really busy right now and you can't handle the responsibility of caring for her dog.

How much to charge for taking care of neighbors dog?
Q. I'm going to be taking care of my neighbors dog, a golden retriver, for 8 days. This will include feeding, walking, putting him in at night and letting him out in the morning. Also I will be feeding the cat and putting him in and out.
My neighbor wants to know how much I want to get paid per day, and that she will pay me as much as a kennel would.

How much should I charge?

A. we do it for free...neighborly thing to do.... they do it for us in return! You never know when you might need your neighbors help

Are there any vets in Bakersfield california that knows how to care for chinchillas?

Q. My boyfriend and I both have chinchillas and im worried that when i need care for them from a vet i wont know where to go. I have searched online to find one but I have had no luck. Please if you have any recommendations let me know.

A. You may want to check out http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com. CnH is a web forum and it has a section just for veterinary listings that owners's recommend, plus you do not find one listed in your area you could post the question to see if there is another owner in your area and if they have a favorite.

How much does the first vet visit for a kitten cost?
Q. Just an estimate would help.

I just got a 6-8 week old kitten. What does she need at her first vet visit? Thanks!

A. If you wait until she's about 12 weeks, you can get her spayed and get her immunizations as well. Most cities have a low cost or free spay and neuter clinic in order to keep the pet population down. They usually give your pet a checkup and immunizations for a minimal fee. I got a free neuter for my cat and I paid about $150 for his shots, his FIV test and fecal tests. Do a web search for low cost spay clinics and call to find out if they perform other services as well.

How many years do you have to study to become a vet in south africa?
Q. How many years do you have to study to become a vet?
What age should i start studying?...What are the school grade and subject requirements?....by the way im from south africa and im 15. i really wanna know because im detemined to become a vet. can you please give me any information about veterinary study and whatever. Thanks i really apreciate all your help!

A. In South Africa one can study to become a veterinarian at the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort. It is currently a 3-Year Bsc (Veterinary Biology) followed by a 4-Year BVSc degree. It will change to 6-Year BVSc degree from 2010.
http://web.up.ac.za/default.asp?ipkCategoryID=50

The entry requirements are very high, usually at the same level as human medicine degrees. You need to aim for top marks to gain entry. It is a good thing that you are making your enquiries now, while you still have time to prepare.

You can also find out more about veterinarian's careers at the SA Veterinary Association

Hope this helps.

How come people say milk is bad for dogs?

Q. 2 stories: My husband had a dog when we were dating about 9years ago. He found the dog laying on the ground taking his last breath almost dying and growing up people told us when a dog is sick give them milk. My husband gets the gallon of milk ,opens the dogs mouth and makes the dog drink it. After 5 minutes the dog gets up, almost falling but gets up and starts walking. That dog died of old age.
Another story: My small female chihuahua was coughing and vomiting and I gave her milk, within a few minutes, I no longer heard the cough and she stopped vomiting. Do my dogs just have strong digestive systems or what? Or does Milk really help sick dogs?Just wondering if anyone else has used this on there sick dog?

A. Dogs are supposdly lactose intolerant. My dog drinks milk all the time and he is 10 now and living a healthy life. I think milk calms stomach acid like it does in humans which is why a dog would do well to have some. I think that it just depends on the theory people live by...I say whatever works for you.

What is the best food to feed an underweight large breed dog?
Q. We started a rescue in New Orleans and have gotten several underweight or sick dogs, I am looking for a good food to put weight back on them.If anyone can help please let me know,

A. Please, make the investment to get really good food. Some pet food stores will give you donations because you are a rescuer. If there's a Red Bandanna where you are, check with them. They are good about donations, and any food you get from them is excellent. Anything you can buy in a grocery store pretty much sucks. Those foods (even Purina One and Iams) are filled with by-products and corn, which dogs can't digest. They also spray them with fat to make them taste better. At Petco they have Natural Balance Duck and Potato which is easy on the tummy and will help build them up in a healthy way. Also check out Solid Gold, Avoderm (especially if there's a skin problem, this stuff works wonders), and at PetSmart try Blue Buffalo. And again, if there's a Red Bandanna Food Store in your area, anything they have is awesome. I hope that helps, and good luck!

Can my dogs get sick through me?
Q. I'm vacationing in a foreign country and may have come in contact with some sick dogs. I'm fine but will my dogs at home get sick through me when I go back? In other words, can I be a carrier for dog's infectious diseases?

Thanks.
My dogs get all the annual vaccine and booters from the vet.

A. i think viruses die pretty quickly when exposed to air and especially sunshine....bacteria i'm not so sure of....if you have something that you think may have been contaminated but you cannot wash it, at least put it out it in the sunshine for several hours...good luck

How long does kennel cough last in young dogs?
Q. I'm planning to adopt a dog, but it turns out it got kennel cough. It's only four months old, so how long until the dog would be better if treated? I don't want to bring home a still slightly sick dog because I have an old dog and I don't want her to get sick.

A. First get your other dog treated using the nasal dose (it works better). The cough can last several weeks and is highly contagious. It's not life threatening but can cause complications in an already sick dog. You don't want to expose your other dog to it until you have it cleared up. You will need to keep it in quarantine until it is past the contageous stages.

How do people make two dogs fight each other? i mean, how do they just force them to do it?

Q. How can u make two dogs fight each other when the dogs can jsut not want to do that? DO the owners beatthem and make them fight each other?
I'm honestly curious to knwo how you can force somethign to do that. it's cruel and inhumane.

A. They dont force them, the dog wants to fight the other dog! They train with small animals (kittens, rabbits, baby racoons ect.) and then they move to other dogs. It is very brutal what they will do to each other just to please their owner!

Do you think its wrong that Koreans and some Asian countries eat dog?
Q. I mean, it's very hypocritical for one to say that its animal cruelty if they eat cows and pigs. over 100 millions animals are slaughtered yearly for food. So what makes dogs any different?

Is it just because they are pets, and they are overly obsessed with their bets that they have hatred towards anything that goes against it??

isnt that thinking in only one dimension, and selfishly?

A. No, dog dishes can be quite delicious

How does chaining a dog make it mean?
Q. I have 4 outside dogs ( 2 pits, a Beagle, and a Newfoundland). My Newfoundland is the only one that will attempt to jump the fence and he has done so on many occasions. So, therefor I had no other choice but to chain him. Exactly how does this make a dog aggressive?
A much higher 6 footer is going to be built but not until next year. And yes I do interact with my dogs daily.

A. This is a link to a Cornell study: http://www.pitbull-chat.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=157&d=1182906083

The conclusion of the study is that chaining has no more negative affect than keeping a dog in a pen.

The lack of interaction and exercise if just left on the chain 24/7 is where you are going to have issues. If the chain is used for containment and the dog is exercised and well cared for, there should be no issues.

Why does everyone feel the need to breed their dogs?
Q. It seems like I spend all of my time online (here and elsewhere) telling people to please NOT breed their random dogs just because they want cute puppies or to make money. Do people realize that dog overpopulation means a death sentence for millions of (very cute, well-behaved, often pure-bred) dogs every year? And how about the health problems that many dogs have that make it difficult for them to have babies without complications? And the genetic defects (that can't always been seen until the dog gets older) they can transfer to their offspring? And just the simple fact that the world does NOT need any more dogs--we have way way way more than enough already? That dog breeding is only responsibly done by actual breeders with years of experience, not people who's idea of "research" is Yahoo?

So, why do people not spay and neuter their dogs? Is it out of selfishness (OMG my dog is the best dog in the whole entire world so none of the normal rules and facts apply), greed or ignorance?
I know there are lots of responsible dog owners who spay and neuter--I have two healthy, neutered dogs. But I am just completely horrified at the numbers of people that I keep encountering who seem to feel that breeding their family dog is a good idea.

A. EVERYONE doesn't. My dogs are always spayed and neutered. Why would I want to bring more unwanted animals into the world? Every dog deserves a good home and love.

What do you have to do to be a veterinarian assistant?

Q. I mean, do you have to study all of the things the the veterinarian would?
I would like to be a veterinarian, but I hate science. I wouldn't want to do it.
So would being a veterinarian assistant also include knowing all the bones in the animals, and all of that science stuff?

Also, what would being a veterinarian secretary include?

A. Information about the requirements to become a veterinarian are below.

A veterinarian secretary is basically a secretary./

Can anyone recommend a Veterinarian in the South Hills of Pittsburgh?
Q. My dog is in need of a Veterinarian and I am not rich.

A. Hi there!

If your dog is in need of veterinary care, most veterinarians can provide a payment plan or are enrolled in http://www.carecredit.com/ which is a service of credit with no interest for the first year, depending on the cost of the care provided.

Of course your dog's care is the most important thing to you, and your veterinarian will discuss the cost of this care prior to the service, and also should list alternatives based on your ability to pay. I have found that most good vets will work with clients so their dogs can be taken care of, which is why they are in practice!

The quality of that care is most important as well. Even if a veterinarian charges a huge fee it does not necessarily mean that the care is up to par. Be careful in chosing a vet. Here is an article I found in my search that discusses the important things in finding the best veterinarian.
http://dogtime.com/finding-vet-hsus.html

You can also check out this link to find a local veterinary hospital in your area.

http://localsearch.live.com/localsearch/default.aspx?what=veterinarians&where=Pittsburgh%2c+PA&s_cid=ansPhBkYp01

I do hope that you find that excellent veterinarian and good luck with your dog! Hope this is of help to you.

What is the salary and college time for becoming a veterinarian?
Q. Hey everyone! i am very interested in becomes a veterinarian, can somebody please tell me, How many years of schooling does it take to become a vet? And also, their average salary? if you could also tell me the salary and schooling of being a vet technician that would be great too. :) thank you!

A. After you earn your bachelor's degree you are looking at 4 years to become a veterinarian. There are only 27 colleges that you can attend to become a veterinarian and they are harder to get into than medical school. You will also need about 1000 or more hours working with animals. That could be working in a shelter, for a vet., or a zoo before you apply for vet. school. National average for a vet. is $85,000/year.

Associate's degree programs are the most popular training path for veterinary technicians. The two-year program typically covers courses in veterinary technology, Veterinary office management, animal anatomy and physiology, and animal parasitology. Some courses are taught using live animals in clinical settings. National average for a vet. tech. is $30,000/year.

What kind of associates degree would help me to become a vet tech or a veterinarian?
Q. I'm currently living overseas and their are no veterinarians here. I'd like to start my degree to become a vet tech (or maybe even a veterinarian) right now, but with no veterinarians here, I don't think any school will give the degree without working under a veterinarian. I don't want to waste a year not going to school. What kind of associates degree or even certificates would help me get a jump start?

A. You are correct that most schools are not going to allow you to earn a degree in veterinary technology without working under a licensed veterinarian. If you are looking at schools based in America, the ones that are worth earning a degree through are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and require that you have so many hours of hands on work in a veterinary facility and learn to perform a list of required skills under the training of a licensed DVM or credentialed technician.

What you can do is start earning your basic course credits such as english, math and social sciences so that you have the pre-requisites for whatever degree program you decide to attend at a later date.

How do you get rid of the smell and stain of dog urine on a wool area rug?
Q. We had an old sick dog who urinated on the rug several times; we had the rug cleaned but the smell is worse than ever.

A. Have you tried fabreeze? That works for me. I have 5 small markers. It really helps.

what should I look for when I go see this rescue dog? I Do not want to bring home a sick dog?
Q. I am going to go look at a new dog for our family, what warning signs should I be aware of? How do I tell if he is sick or diseased? Do I just spend enough time around him to see if he is coughing and check him for fleas? I Do not want a sick dog

A. Ask the shelter to see vet records and proof that the dog has been tested for worms - our dogs are tested as soon as they come in and if they ever show signs of illness (blood in stool, vomiting, etc.)

Make sure the dog is up to date (UTD) on vaccinations. Beyond that, they can't really assure that the dog will not be "sick" - colds and general illnesses can be common in shelters.

Check that the dg is bright and alert. Clear eyes, no nasal discharge, no coughing or sneezing. The dog should also be interested in it's environment as well as you. Should not really be cowering in a corner or laying down too much, either.

I would also observe the dog's behavior - is the dog jumpy, easy to scare, is the dog gravitating towards you or away from you, does the dog nip or grab at clothing, how does the dog react to passers by (people and other dogs). Ask shelter workers if they ever notice anything "off" about the dog - such as food bowl aggression, how it reacts to the other dogs, etc.

It would be a plus if the shelter does behavioral exams but not all do. Do you know what you want in a dog? I wouldn't go into a shelter unless you know what you're looking for - you need to choose a dog that will MATCH you perfectly or you may end up returning the dog.

Think about size, energy level, exercise needs, grooming needs, etc - if you don't want high energy then stay away from collie or herding dog mixes, if you want easy to train stay away from hounds. Stuff like that.

JRome - No. Sorry, but "many rescue dogs" do not have Wobbler Syndrome. I work in a shelter - we see 25+ new pups/adults every two weeks and have our "usual" dogs - which means there is usually 40+ dogs in our shelter at one time - and i have NEVER seen a dog with Wobbler Syndrome. No diagnosis of it either. Where'd you hear that, television?

Is it possible for a dog to be misdiagnosed with kidney failure?
Q. My 11-1/2 yo lab was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. The vets were amazed at her numbers as she is still so happy and active and does not act at all like a sick dog. The vet put her on special diet with supplements and the excessive thirst and urination stopped almost immediately and she seems even perkier than before. Is it possible that the test could be in error? Could it be the result of her "getting into something" that was passing through her system?

A. Every dog is different with kidney failure and you treat the dog and not the numbers which are a guide to getting worse or improving. If it is Acute kidney failure then maybe the tests will change, if Chronic (kindeys damaged but managing, just, long term) then the tests are usually right.

How much will it cost the vet to fix my lovebirds broken leg?
Q. My lovebird broke it's leg sometime today while I was at work. All the vets and pet shops are closed and I'm not sure what to do. I don't think the bird is in too much pain. It is still moving around and hopping on one leg.

A. Make sure he Vet you have is an Avian Vet, and as for how much it cost that varies from Vet to Vet. the sooner you get the bird to a Vet the better chance you will have in getting the leg repaired to heal normally. I have seen birds that had a untreated broken leg, and they learn to compensate very well.

If you can not afford the procedure of a Vet I have included a link showing how to splint a bird's broken leg.

Is Royal Canin a good brand of dog food?
Q. How can you know for sure, as in not just opinions? Multiple vets & pet stores have told me it is definitely one of the better brands. But some say otherwise.

A. Ingredients Speak for themselves. Corn, wheat, soy, by-products, beet pulp, sugar, ethoxiquin, BHA and BHT, powdered cellulose are all thins that dogs should not consume but are in most dog foods. look for foods that have beef or chicken or fish meal first on the list. This is what the dog really needs. Next should be something like rice or potatoes or millet. Then some oil. Make sure there is between 18 and 45% protein from meat not grains (you may have to call the company to find out)

If you want a suggestion for a healthy pet food send me an email. I have been helping owners find healthy foods for a long time.

Also look and see if the companey is trustworthy. Look and see what kind of recalls they have had and why. Blue had a recall of rice concentrat that was handled very poorly so I would never feed that food. Royal Canin was involved in the recalls 2 years ago with many foods being recalled. This tells me they don't know their sources very well. I would not trust that with my dogs.

How long do vets keep the pets after they fix them?
Q. How long do the vets keep the pets(cat or dog or kitten or pup) after they spayed or neutered the animal? Two days? Do they give them pain meds? Just curious is all.
