Q. There are many shepherd type dogs and many mastiff type dogs. There are also many dogs that look a lot like a shepherd yet aren't a shepherd and there are many really big dogs that aren't mastiffs. Have I confused you enough yet? My question is...what makes a shepherd dog a shepherd dog and what makes a mastiff a mastiff?
I want to know what defines shepherd type dogs and mastiff type dogs, not the german shepherd and mastiff breeds. Sorry for any confusion.

A. Mastiff-types are massive - muscular, broad chested, and tall. They have rounded, dome-shaped skulls. They have a pronounced stop (the spot where the muzzle protrudes from the head - Collies do not have a pronounced stop, if that helps). Their eyes often appear to be deep-set. Most have very short fur, but not all. Most have droopy ears that are set wide on the head.
Shepherd-types are medium to large. They are more narrow and lithe. They have long narrow muzzles. Their ears are erect and set on top of the head. They usually have denser coats. They have a somewhat deep chest (there should be a definite rise in the body line from the chest to the stomach). Their backs may slope down toward the hindquarters.

What type of dog is best suited to live in the Caribbean?
Q. I want to buy a dog here but Im concerned that certain dogs have may respiratory problems here due to the heat. Additionally, the skin type or coat may also be problematic here due to the heat and humidity, particularly since most dogs live outside in a dog house. My previous dogs were a Lhasa Apso and a Bichon Frise so I like toy group type dogs. Which type of dog is best for the climate down here?
A. Well toy dogs are meant to be in the house, if you want to put a dog outside, you need an outside dog. There are plenty of dogs from South America and Africa who can take the heat. The 3 that come to mind immediately are the African Boerboel, the Dogo Argentino, and the Ridgeback...but these aren't the cute little dogs you seem to be searching for. If you want a lap dog it needs to be inside...preferably on your lap...
How do I stop my 5yr old male chihuahua from humping other male dogs?
Q. No matter what type of dog, my dog insists on humping them. It starting to get really embarrassing. My dog cannot interact with any other dog without it humping. Please help.
I just hate it because there is another male chitzu and he doesn't hump at all!

A. If you want to put it in human terms, he has the, "Little man attitude".
He is trying to dominate all the other dogs. If he can get his head higher than the other dogs head, he feels he has accomplished his deed. It is a domination thing, not a sexual thing & it is common Canine Behavior.

What type of dog food do you feed your dog?
Q. I want to know what type of dog food your feed your dog(s).
Because someone on here told me what I feed my dog is crap, even though my vet reccommended it. She said that my vet of course would tell me to get a "bad" brand of dog food so it'll make my dog sick and I will have to keep bringing it in there so she'll make more money.
Who really believes this crap?!
If your vet recommended your dog to be on a certain dog food would you contest it?

A. Everyone has a food they think is the best, and perhaps it is FOR THEIR DOG. There is no one shoe fits all with dog foods. Not a bit different than there is no one diet that is perfect for all people. Some people are Hyper while others are Hypo, same with dogs.
A classic example is some dogs will have a loose stool on a chicken based diet while others won't retain proper weight on a lamb based diet. So I feed both, either in combination or separately, depending on the individual dogs needs.
I feed the brand that I do because my dogs win in the ring when fed this diet. That doesn't by any stretch of the imagination mean that it would be the proper diet for every dog out there.
