Q. My friend went through a divorce a while back and his wife and kids brought home a dog that he never wanted. They promised they would take care of the dog. Now his daughter and him are the only ones at the house. The daughter spends the night out with friends, works full time, and goes to school full time. The dad works and is rarely home. He loves his daughter very much, but he's tired of being the one taking care of a dog he never wanted. The dog has ruined the carpets in every single room with poop and piss. When he tells his daughter the dog has to go, she gets VERY upset. He has given her many alternatives and warnings on what to do with the dog, to no avail. Has anyone else gone through this? What would you do? She has just graduated from high school.

A. unfortunately...theres nothing you can do..the dog isn't going to change..and if it does it's not going to be easy to train it. The girl should have to take care of it, or her dad should take something away from her, like tell her if she can't take care of the dog, he's finding a new home for it,(no one is going to want a 10 year old dog that isn't house trained) or she's going to have to find a new place to live with her dog.
That's ridiculous. This question makes me really mad..

I hope something good happends to that poor dog, and the girl stop being so selfish and take care of her responsibilties

How do I convince my parents that I am responsible enough t o take care of a dog of my own?

Q. Throughout my life, I have been critisized, put-down, and made fun of because I don't have a dog. I am in middle school, so when someone says something mean to you, you don't forgive and forget easily. No one in my family beleives that I can take care of and support a dog of my own, not even my friends. Its hard to know that the only person you can count on to beleive in you is yourself. Not having a dog has had a major impact on my middle school life. I can't participate in school activities having to do with animals. I can't take feild trips to humain societies without bursting out into tears. I see people who have dogs and don't take care of them and I get mad. I am very elegable to do things around the house, but when I try I am never agnolaged. I don't think my parents understand how I feel, or what it's like to be in my shoes. They both had five dogs when they were growing up. How could I convince my parents that I am responsible enough to take care of a dog?

A. You could volunteer at your local animal shelter a few hours a week or maybe try dog walking on weekends. See what is all involved in taking care of a pet. Stick to it, Maybe your parents will see how committed you are. Good Luck!

I really want a dog, and I told my parents that I will take care of it 100%, I will get a job next summer to hep pay for it, I will walk it every day, etc. I even went online and decided that I want to adopt a Boston Terrier from a rescue organization. I get very good grades, do all my chores without being asked, and am an all around good kid. however, my parents think I will not take care of the dog-although they have no prior experiences to reference, and they say they will be stuck with the dog when I go to college in 3 years. After they voiced their concerns I went online and found an apartment complex close to the college I want to attend that allows dogs, I realize the first year I have to live on campus but after that I can move off campus and bring the dog with me. I told my parents, and they still think I will not stick to my word. Is there anything I can do to show my parents that I really can take care of a dog?
Also my only sister's going off to college and my parents are divorced so im going to be going between houses by myself and im going to be stuck with adults for the next three years- a dog would be a companion so i would be less lonely

A. You sound like a responsible kid to me, I doubt that your being able and willing to care for a dog is at the heart of your parents objections. Ask your parents if there are any conditions under which they would consider letting you have a dog. If your parent are really dead set against dogs then I really suggest that you wait until you are on your own to get the dog. The hassle you will have to lay on your parents to get your way is going to make everyone unhappy for years.

A. Well, here is my example, I have a German Shepherd mix puppy...

During the week.

I'll wake up early enough to feed my puppy. We'll go the neighborhood park for 20 min to walk around, and I'll play with him at home. They say that training sessions for a puppy should not be long...so I'll do some commands for about 10 min in the morning.
I come home for lunch everyday...feed him and walk him in our yard. Play/practice commands with him for a little bit.
After work, we usually will go back to the park for another 20 - 30 min. I'll play fetch with him outside, practice more stuff, play with him. Feed him and groom him. Then off to sleep at 10 - 11 pm.

And on the weekends, there is plenty of time to do stuff. I will only crate him during the weekends if I need to run out to the store or something.

I'm not sure if that's enough, but it seems to work for us so far. And we are having a trainer come for 2 sessions in our home. I will also sign him up for a local dog park/training when he is 5 month old.
