How do I get my dog to stand grooming better?

Q. I have a six month old Samoyed puppy. If you know the breed, you know they need A LOT of grooming. If you don't know the breed, here's an overview- they are big husky type dogs, but completely white with a double coat that needs a lot of brushing.

Right now whenever I groom my puppy, I give her a Kong, a bone, or another brush to chew on. However, if she doesn't have any of these, she'll go crazy and try to bite the brush. Even with these, its hard to groom her on her stomach because she'll drop her bone and so try to bite her brush.

I would like to know if anyone has any tips on getting her to remain calm with occasional treats every few minutes as a groom her (like a show dog). It's also worth mentioning that she is fantastic in the bath- just sits there and lets us do anything to her!

Finally, I wondered if anyone knew any volumizing shampoos for dogs. Her hair is pretty limp, and since she gets fed a good diet think it might be the shampoo that we are using.

A. At 6 months she is allowed to be playful!

Feed her first, so the tummy is nice and full, have some treats ready for rewarding "good" behaviour.

Most of all, be very very gentle. Some dogs try to bite the brush because they feel it s uncomfortable for them.

For good coat you can't go past a a raw egg yolk twice a week. (ONLY the YOLK!!!)

What supplies do I need if my dog has puppies?
Q. Im getting a dog. I want it to have puppies w/ my cousins dog.The type of dog is a Bichon Frise', if it makes a difference.

A. you will need a whelping box for the dog to have her puppies in, bulb syring for cleaning out the nose and mouth if the mother is slow at doing it or doesnt do it all, lots of towels and or blankets so you can keep changing them during the delivery process, a pair of scissors so you can cut the cord if the mother doesnt do it, string to tie off the cord before you cut it, bottles in case for some reason the momma cant nurse them, goats milk on hand, for the same reason, and i would also suggest you get some advise from an experianced breeder to get some helpful info before you breed cause anything can go wrong during the pregnancy and labor process, I hope this has helped and good luck with breeding and i wanted to let you know alot of people dont want to help other people start out at breeding,, but i see that people have to start somewhere, and i have no problem trying to help someone that wants to breed their dog but if your breeding for money then that is a bad reason to breed,, I hope i have helped and Happy Holidays,, if you have any other questions please feel free to email me
Edit:
I forgot to mention that you will need a set of baby scales to weigh the puppies from the day they are born and every day untill you place them with their new homes so you can make sure that they arent losing weight,
also another thing that i do for my puppies is that i get differant colors of collars so i can tell them apart and a journal book to wright down when the first one is born and so on and the weight for each one, identifying them by the collar

How do I pick a big headed bullmastiff puppy?
Q. I am curious how to choose a big headed bullmastiff , Or any bull type dog for that matter. Wht characteristics as puppies are signs of having a large head in adulthood? Thanks.

A. The head should always be proportionate to the body. Bullmastiffs are not supposed to have unusually large heads. Read the standard. You can see if they have the potential to have a *correct* head by looking at the parents. That being said, at 8 weeks it's nearly impossible to predict what a pup will mature out like. That's why you want to buy from a responsible breeder who knows their lines back many generations.

What type of dogs are born without tails?

Q. my dog had puppies and some of them had tails and some did not, they either had a bob tail or a very short nub. I cant load pictures but what type of dogs are born without tells? The mother is black and white and looks like a lab/pitt mix maybe boxer and the dad is golden color. Both are medium height, like a bit. Both do not have a tail, just a small nub. Both are same breed dog
oh bobbie, stfu
puppies arent bad to have, you dont know my situation, I have plenty of land for these dogs. A pure bread is not any better than a mutt. only people like u think so, ur a waste of life

A. I'm not sure of specific breed that can be born with no tail, but this is possible in all breeds due to genetic mutation or other reason. and I agree with you that mutts are just the same with purebred. they are lovable and they give you unconditional love just like any purebreds.
hope this helps

What type of dry dog food is good for a papillon puppy?
Q. I want to adopt a papillon puppy and I read that Pedigree, Iams, and Purina are not good to give to dogs because they don't have the nutrition that both puppies and dogs need. What type of dry dog food is healthy and safe for them?

A. Feeding your dog holistic (natural) foods is the best choice. These foods are more easily digested and absorbed by the dog, which translates to less food consumed and less poo. After researching extensively on dog foods and trying out a few, I would recommend Wellness or Solid Gold. Buy the dry food for puppies and it'll work wonders! I wouldn't feed my new puppy anything else.

What Type of puppy should you get if you have a 17 yr old cocker?
Q. I have a 17 yr old cocker at home and were in search for a new puppy! yay! But we cant seem to find the right type of dog to get that is safe around cats, dogs, and kids...... please give me some breeds of dogs that might be good. (like list about 6-10 types of dogs) thx lots......... Peace out!

A. spaniels are a good dog around other pets because they tend to be docile
there are many kinds of spaniels from the king charles to the springer
some spaniels dont like kids, but that is depending on the dog and no way to tell as a puppy
other dogs that are good is
pug
poodle
pug-chihuahua cross
boston
weinee dog
snauzer
bichon frise
lahsa apso
it also depends greatly on the dogs personality and the training you give them. not all dogs are created equal regardless of breed
ones i would avoid are
rat terriers and jack russels....too wild and willful, would eat your cats
german sheapard, chow, sharpei, dalmation....are going to bite someone
yorkie....a wad of matted hair with rotten teeth no matter how much you groom it
bulldog....always has health problems and costs a kings randsom

HELP! Where can I find a yorkie type dog without going to a place where they get their dogs from puppy mills?
Q. I have gone to places like animal welfare, ect. but they don't have a lot of small dogs. I would really like to not get my dog from a puppy mill place. I'm pretty much dead set on a yorkie. Please Please Help!

thanks.

Any suggestions on what type of dog I should get?
Q. We are thinking about getting a puppy soon, and we're not sure what breed we should get. We know we want a mix, though.

We want a lap dog. Not small enough to fit into a purse or anything, but small enough to sit up on the couch with us or sleep between us in bed.

We have three children, the youngest being two, so it has to be good with kids. We also don't want a worker dog. We just want a lay-around-and-relax type of dog who can snuggle, but still knows how to play.

We had a golden retriever, and she was the best dog you could ask for, but she had so many health issues and allergies that we could barely keep up with her. She died from cancer last November, and we don't want to go through that again. However, our black lab desperately needs a playmate!

Basically, we want a generally healthy, low-maintenance, kid-friendly pooch who is loveable and snuggly!

A. I think a beagle or basset mix would be good for you, they are fairly independent but like to cuddle, they are loyal pets and usually good with children. they are pretty short haired pups too so they a re low maintenance. Now you said you want to get a puppy but you could keep up with your last dog... have you considered getting a little bit older dog say 6-12 months old thats partially or completely trained, it would be alot less work. Make sure when you go to pick out the dog the whole family (including your lab)goes and can get along with and agree on the pet.

What would be the best type of dog for my family and I?
Q. I am looking for a puppy. The only thing is I don't know what type of dog to get. I have been looking for the perfect dog for my family. We are fairly active. My kids are 2 and 1. And the place I live at doesn't allow dogs more than 30 lbs. Can you all suggest a good type of breed for us?

A. Hi,
I imagine children that age take a lot of time and energy.

I personally suggest you hold off on getting any animal at this time in your life.

I do not think it is fair to the dog or the children if you get a dog.

I also do not think it is fair for a dog to be subjected to children that age. Wait until your children are older (7-8) so that THEY CAN BE TRAINED how to behave with a dog.

Enjoy your human children right now. They grow up so fast. There is a lot of time in your life to get a dog. Then it can be fun for the whole family and not a chore.

I have linked an article about Children and Dogs that is really worth reading. It is written by the well known and esteemed dog trainer and judge Dany Canino.

What is the best puppy food that fills the pup/dog and least poop?

Q. I heard that there was a certain type of dog/puppy food that fills there stomach but they poop less.anyone know?

A. Any of the premium brands of kibble that you will find at your local pet supply shop.
My favorite is Canidae,, as it is made from all human grade ingredients, and all ingredients are grown and processed in USA.
None of the kibbles at your grocer;s are worthy of feeding your dog..they all have fillers (poop!) and you end up paying for poop by the pound!
with the premium kibbles, there are no fillers, but only digestible nutritious ingredients.
The premium brands actually cost considerably less per month to feed..as the dogs eat less and waste (poop) less.
Other good brands are Wellness and Innova Evo (no grains)

when my large breed was eating Nutro Max, they each ate about a bag per month..Now I am feeding Canidae, and they each eat 1/2 bag per month (40 pound bags) So, I was paying for 20 pounds of poop per dog each month!

What do you call a dog that is part pekingese and a shih tzu?
Q. I have a pekingese and a shih tzu that made two puppies, so i was wonder what type of dog their puppies are instead of a mutt.

A. They are commonly referred to as the Shih-Tze. Here are some pictures and info: http://www.designermixes.org/Breed_Info/440/Shih-teze.aspx

Good Luck!

How often are you supposed to bath a dog/puppy?
Q. We recently got a Newfoundland/Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and I've been giving her a bath once a week because she loves to tromp around with our two boys and tends to get really dirty. But, my husband heard that you aren't supposed to bath a dog too often because it dries out their skin. So, my question is: How often is not too often?

A. Weekly bathing is not a problem as long as you are using an appropriate shampoo for dogs. If you dog does not having any types of skin issues, I wouldn't worry. Make sure that you are drying the coat thoroughly after bathing so that the skin does not suffer, and if possible, use a moisturizing shampoo.

If you notice flakes of dandruff & they are dry & tend to fall right off, then you are drying out the skin. If the flakes appear greasy & thick, she may have oily skin, or may be producing extra oil to compensate for the bathing.

In most cases, weekly bathing is not going to be a problem, but as a compromise, you can give her a 'dry bath'. There are many products available for this, it involves cleaning solution that is rubbed into the coat, but doesn't require water or rinsing.

Also, I have found for my dogs that a pet wipe works well between bathing. They are made especially for dogs & contain lanolin to help protect the coat, & have no alcohol (do not use baby wipes, which have alcohol & would dry out the coat & skin).
