your dogs food should always contain Meat as the first 4 ingredients at the least, no corn, no grains, no fillers or by products.

I know you mentioned following your vets advice but let me assure you that, that is not true when it comes to food. Vets actually do not undergo education in the nutrition area, and most of them recommend crap like Science Diet because they actually get paid to stock that stuff in their offices, when it is one of the worst foods you could feed any pet.

Use a wash cloth with warm water and gently wipe the ear clean. Or buy a cleaning solution from the pet store and follow it's instructions.

A. Even though you can't afford to take him to the vet, call one. My vet is always willing to give advice over the phone. It could be a number of problems. Do you have any other pets that may have bit or scratched him? What part of the country do you live in? Many states have parasites that are worse than others. You can put an ointment like neosporin on it. A cone would also work well!

A. If they are polysporin eye drops go for it. Try it for a few days and see if the eye is better but be sure to give it at least 5 days.
You can buy terramycin eye drops for cat at a pet store so that might be a better option.

can a 4 month old pup even go on a flight? or are there regulations as far as age limits? you may want to double check.

also, make sure he stays well hydrated-i believe he has to stay crated, so keep a familiar blanket in there, and one of those clip on water bottles.

A. You really need to go to a vet straight up. If there is a yeast or bacterial infection, the dog really needs medicated (antibiotic/antifungal) ear drops to clear it up. The other thing with ear infections is that it's important to check that a/ there is nothing down the ear that has triggered the infection (e.g. a grass seed) and that the ear drum is not damaged in anyway. If there's something down the ear, then the infection's not going to go away regardless of what it is treated with. If the ear drum is damaged, you have to be very, very careful about anything that is put in the ear- some products, even veterinary ear drops, can lead to problems such as deafness if they are put down the ear canal and are able to pass through into the middle/inner ear.

I think your dog's warts will just go away, too, if you give them enough time.

How often should I feed a one year old sheltie?

Q. My sheltie turned one this past wednesday. I have been feeding her twice a day as a puppy due to my vets advice. Yes, I know not to substitute yahoo answers for my vets advice. But can anyone tell me if it is true that adult dogs should be fed once a day? Thanks.

A. You could drop back to once a day in adulthood, but I've always stayed at twice a day. It's easier on the dog's system to have two meals if you're feeding kibble. And as it's one of the highlights of most dogs' day, why not keep on feeding them twice?

In bloat-prone breeds, you don't want to ever drop back to once a day as it can increase the likelihood of bloating.

Now that he's full-grown, you may need to drop back the total amount of food, but I'd stick with twice-a-day feedings.

Can roundworms be present in a negative fecal sample?

Q. We took vet advice and went with a 1/2 pill of Drontal Plus now and then again in 3 weeks for our new 8 week old puppy that had not been de-wormed yet NO worms were found in feces. Vet said roundworm eggs that are microscopic could still be present even on the coat of the dog and urged regular handwashing for my 10 year old who over does that already. He said in some individuals blindness had occurred in those infected with roundworm-mainly children. We are washing our hands FREQUENTLY now as my daughter became quite scared of the pup as a result. Any practical advice to calm the excessive handwashing out there re: puppy as a possible contaminant? On the internet, the CDC publishes th10,000 new cases of infection with roundworm and 700 cases of permanent visual loss in children mainly 5-10. My daughter, thank God is healthy and with the negative sample, I just have her wash hands after playing with the pup and prior to eating as the vet said. Anyone aware of this or have advice?

A. We look for parasite eggs microscopically when we are trying to detect worms. Sometimes the worms just aren't shedding any eggs in the stool that day, or the sample wasn't adequate to test properly. So YES, the pup can have worms but test negative. At our practice, we test the stool each time the pup comes in for a booster vaccine. Sometimes we don't detect some parasites until the 2nd or 3rd visit! Your vet did the right thing by deworming your puppy anyway. Parasites are a possible health risk, especially to children and immuno-compromised people.

Pick up your puppys stool and dispose of it. Don't let it sit outside to contaminate the yard and cause reinfection. Wash hands after playing with the puppy and after playing outside. Wear shoes outside. These worms can live for years in the soil and may be spread by roaming cats and dogs as well. Keep your puppy on a heartworm prevention monthly that will also keep him dewormed for intestinal parasites as well. Most puppies and kittens are born with roundworms. Don't be afraid of your puppy! Just follow your vets advice and you should do just fine.
