What can we do for our very sick dog with leukemia?

Q. My daughter has a Heeler/Pit which is only 2 years old and he was diagnosed with Leukemia earlier this year so I went out and bought her a purebread Heeler pup and would'nt you know..the sick dog got better and the vet said he was very healthy and his blood test came back clear. Now all of a sudden he got real sick very fast, won't eat, looses his bladder and is mucus coming from his nose, after a moment he comes out of it.

A. Theres a book that may give you some help, because it has references to caring for unhealthy pets and how to alter their diet to improve the condition of failing organs, etc...

and I would also suggest these two resources:

The Dog Owners Home Veterinary Handbook by James M. Giffin

the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association

Not much, but you might find something through those sources to help.

I personally feel that a lot of Leukemia and cancer in general in pets comes from their diet. The preservatives, colorings and poor quality of protein in pet food (literally waste swept up off the slaughterhouse floor in many instances) leads to all sorts of diseases. The first book I mentioned talks alot about where and what is good pet food...

How much would you spend on your sick dog? I just spent $1500. Where would you draw the line?
Q. MY dog had to have emergency surgery. She is a young lab of six years old. She had gotten an infection after her heat cycle and became quite toxix. She had pyometra. So after I cried for a day because she might die, and because I didn't know where the money would come from to pay the bill I decided I would pay the bill no matter what I had to give up afterward. How much would you pay to save the life of your sick dog?

A. I would spend as much as needed. I dont have much money but I would spend it all on my dog. She is my life!! I couldn't stand losing her.. Everytime something is wrong I get scared that she will die..

Is it illegal to transport sick dogs without health certificate?
Q. If so who can i report this too. The rescue "wags and walks" based in los angeles, who i was formerly fostering for( until i found out how they unethically treat their dogs) ships their sick dogs to tennessee without health certificates. I am pretty sure this is illegal but who do i report this to? any answers would be greatly appreciated

A. The state law enforcement and PETA and the humane society...I hope they get caught and rot in... well sorry so not nice!!!!

For those of you who have sick dogs, would you buy this product?
Q. Our dog has many health problems. Together with our vet we developed a specially mad training treat to give him, when he needs direction or just a treet.

Since we make these treats ourselves each month, it would be so easy to make them for others (just make extras). As owners of sick dogs, would you be willing to by these treats, if we made them to sell?

A. What are the health problems? If I knew you were trustworthy and my dog was diagnosed with the same problems, then sure!

What is a reasonable fee to have to put down a very sick dog?

Q. We have a very sick dog with a heart worm problem that was diagnosed a little too late.

A. I guess you cared more about cost even to the end, since a heartworm pill given monthly would have prevented that and if not then swift medical attention at the first signs of illness since yes heartworms ARE actually treatable. by medical attention, I don't mean asking on yahoo answers what to do about your sick dogs, since your question history is full of them.

Why does my dog avoid my other sick dog?
Q. I have 2 dogs and one is sick. Why does my non sick dog avoid the sick one when she would normally torment him. She is afraid to even go near him and usually they are inseparable?

A. She senses that he's sick and she doesn't know what to do about it. His illness is making her uncomfortable, so she's avoiding it and him. Let her have her space.

How long at a time do sick dogs sleep?
Q. My dog started showing signs of Parvo Monday so we took him to the vet the same day. He stayed at the vets on IV's for a couple of days. He is back home now (Friday) and still sick. How long at one time does a sick dog sleep? Should I wake him to make him drink?

A. never wake a dog up even if it sick. don't want to be ridiculous but he could bite.

How do I get the sick dog smell out of my apartment?

Q. My dog (Rottweiler) was recently sick with an intestinal parasite (she's fine now). Needless to say, she went to the bathroom (diarrhea) and vomited numerous times all over my apartment. Even though I cleaned it up as it happened, I think the smell has somehow embedded itself into the carpet.

No matter what I do, I cannot get the smell out of certain rooms. I've tried using bleach, incense, vacumming, baby powder, opening up all the windows, air fresheners, fans, etc.

Nothing works. No matter what I do, I cannot get the smell out and it's really starting to get to me. I might be able to get the smell out for an hour or two at best, but it always comes back.

At first, I thought my dog was the source of the smell, so I have been giving her a bath everyday, so that rules that source out.

What can I do to get rid of the smell? Do I really have to get my carpets cleaned or is there a cheaper way?

Thanks!

A. My answer will beat these all.
Here's why, My dog, which I had to put to sleep over the summer because of kidney failure...Now she had accidents in the house on the carpet and on the bare floors. Not to mention her body reeked with the smell of death aproaching...now the stuff that you get to get rid of the smell, ( and I learned this ALONG time before this dog) is go to the store (Walmart/kmart,ect). go to the pet section, and look for a white bottle with a picture of a DOG & CAT on it, holding their noses. the name of the stuff is called "OUT" you can get a big bottle and pour it into a capet shampooer just mix it with reg tap water...it has a nice tropical smell and it takes the smell OUT of your carpets instantly!
You can mop your floors with it, takes up Urine and Feeces smell. instantly!!!
This is the ONLY stuff that I found that really works.
On the carpet, if you don't have a carpet cleaner then just pour it on the carpet and use an old towel to lay over it, push down on the towel then let it sit....
Safe for cloth furniture too.

How can I make my sick dog a little more comfortable?
Q. My dog has kennel cough. I took her collar off but I was wondering how I can make her feel more comfortable and heal a little faster? Any recipes or remedies? Anything you do for your dog when they're sick?
yes she's been to the vet and has antibiotics. I was just wanting to baby her a little while she goes through this.

She goes to doggy daycare every day with at least 20 other dogs so I informed them she got it and she won't be going back for three more weeks, poor girl.

A. How do you know its kennel cough??? If a vet has checked her, then she should be on antibiotics.....keep her warm, dry, and quiet...give her plenty of fresh water, and not so much food....Vet first tho, if you haven't already.

How long until a very sick dog with worms gets better?
Q. My dog is very, very sick. After he got out of a dog kennel he was boarded at, he progressively lost about 15 lbs in six weeks, no appetite, had black stools, became very weak. He was hospitalized. They did blood tests, x-rays, an ultrasound, and didn't find anything except that he is very anemic.

Yesterday I saw a worm in his stool. It was very tiny and still moving. So, they put him on dewormer.

Can a dog get this sick from having worms? If so, how long until he starts to feel better and recover?
They aren't sure what kind of worms. The vet said she didn't find any eggs in the stool I brought in but I SAW THE ACTUAL WORM. I checked again after I had picked it up to be sure and saw it again, still moving.

They gave him a 3 day course of Panacur and a 1 day course of Droncit, the latter I will repeat in 10 days.

A. yes, he can definately be this sick from having worms.
as for how long it takes, it depends on what kind of worm he had. and how long he has had it. he sounds pretty sick so he probably has had it quite awhile.

Can I change brands of dog food without my dog getting sick?
Q. I bought my dog a different brand of dog food the other day. Now everytime he eats it (he loves it) about 10 min. later he throws up. Should i keep giving him this food until he adjusts to it or should i change back? I dont want to be cleaning up after a sick dog on a daily basis.

A. What you should had done is mixed that dog food with the old to get him used to it or give him a little bit at different times of the day. They are so used to eating the same thing daily, and their stomach can't get used to that change as fast as we can. You have to start him out slow with any other brand that he's not used to.
